Could the new Scooby-Doo film SCOOB! have gotten away with not having soapy twists and turns? Maybe, if it weren't for that dang soap opera star/screenwriter who penned it!
The upcoming film -- which details the battle of the Scooby gang vs. the ghost dog, Cerberus -- was written by actor-turned-screenwriter Eyal Podell, who soap fans may remember from his 2006-2008 role as Adrian Korbel on The Young and the Restless. And he's joined by a couple of other daytime stars, who have signed on to voice characters in the animated adaptation.
Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez (ex-Beverly, The Bold and the Beautiful) will be voicing brainy sleuth Velma, while Amanda Seyfried (ex-Lucinda Montgomery, As the World Turns; ex-Joni Stafford, All My Children) is voicing "danger-prone" Daphne. Non-soap stars featured in the film include Zac Efron, who will be voicing Fred; Will Forte, who will be voicing Shaggy; Frank Welker, who will be voicing Scooby-Doo; and Mark Wahlberg, who will be playing Blue Falcon.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! made its television debut in 1969 and followed a group of four teenagers and their talking Great Dane, Scooby-Doo, who solved mysteries involving supernatural creatures. The Mystery Inc. gang hit the big screen in 2002 via a live-action film that starred Sarah Michelle Gellar (ex-Kendall Hart, All My Children), Freddie Prinze Jr., Linda Cardellini, Matthew Lillard, and Welker. The last time the characters were seen on the big screen was in Warner Bros.' 2004 live-action film Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.
SCOOB! was scheduled to hit theaters on May 15, but Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has decided to push back its release date due to the coronavirus outbreak. A new date has yet to be announced.
